Using a water chest is often the safest method of keeping items safe during a game. Simply replace one of the dirt blocks in the pool with a chest for everything valuable.
This has the advantage of being impossible to break in the water since players will run out of air first, one of the small disadvantages is the time it can take to retrieve the items. But the benefit will be that if anyone is trying to invade and steal items they will be stuck under water where a mother may have a height and armour advantage.
